Researchers from Purdue University recently unveiled a paper-based skin patch that can help wearers monitor their hydration levels. The low-cost innovation uses tiny microchannels filled with water to measure a person’s sweat secretion. As the wearer sweats, water-activated dye located at one end of the microchannels is released and gradually changes the patch from blue to red.
The palm-sized patch provides a visual representation of moisture loss and could potentially prevent people from becoming dehydrated. The user-friendly product could be helpful for runners and other athletes as well as military personnel and medical professionals. After presenting their innovation at the MicroTAS 2016 Conference, the researchers have begun to pursue a patent for the patch through the Purdue Research Foundation’s Office of Technology Commercialization.
